About the Project

This project supports the ongoing development of national forensic standards by the Crime Scene Investigation and Reconstruction (CSIR) subcommittee within the Organization of Scientific Area Committees (OSAC) for Forensic Science, in collaboration with researchers from the Sensor Science and Statistical Engineering Divisions at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The primary focus is the realization of a standardized Interim Performance Assessment (IPA) protocol that enables forensic practitioners and law enforcement agencies to conduct reliable, in-house quality assurance on terrestrial laser scanners (TLSs). This procedure provides an intermediate check to monitor instrument performance between regularly scheduled manufacturer calibrations.

IPA Overview

The Interim Performance Assessment (IPA) test procedure consists of two primary components and a supplemental appendix:

If the test procedure has been performed before, the user may optionally test if the instrument's performance has changed over time.

The test procedure takes less than 30 min to perform, with additional time for data processing.

Link to Standard

The IPA test procedure is in the process of being incorporated as an official OSAC registry standard. Once the documentary standard is published, direct access to the standard will be hosted below:
