Abstract
For TREC-8, the Berkeley exp eriments concentrated on the sp ecial GIRT collection. We utilized the GIRT thesaurus in multiple ways in working on English-German Cross-Language IR. Since the GIRT collection is truly multilingual (documents contain b oth German and English text), one would exp ect multilingual queries to achieve the b est p erformance. This proved not to b e the case.
